Automotive Service | What is a timing belt?

A modern engine has two main shaft: the crankshaft and camshaft. They must turn at the same time so that the valves of the engine open and close correctly during the intake and exhaust strokes of each cylinder. So that this can happen, a timing belt connects both shafts.

Timing belts must be replaced regularly, which is typically specified on your maintenance schedule from 60,000 to 100,000 miles. If it wears out, it can snap and severely damage the engine. Repairs to or a replacement of the engine can easily run to thousands of dollars. If you hear a shrieking or wining from the engine or your belt is fraying or stained, the timing belt may be ready to break.

Timing belt replacement is a job for professionals. So please visit our service center at Cowboy Dodge in Cheyenne, WY and we’ll be happy to take care of it for you.
